Californians who receive Supplemental Security Income are poised to get another check in May, except it’s for June.
SSI, which is managed by the Social Security Administration, provides monthly funds to qualifying people whose income and resources (such as vehicles or money in their bank accounts) are limited, according to the SSA.
SSI recipients received their May payment earlier in the month, according to the SSA calendar. Now, they’ll receive the June SSI payment on Friday, May 30. The payment is issued early because June 1 falls on a weekend.
That means, in June, as it was in March, SSI beneficiaries will not get a payment in that calendar month.
This recurring calendar quirk crops up again in August when SSI recipients will get two checks — the August payment on Aug. 1 and the September payment on Aug. 29 — but no payment in the calendar month of September.
SSI recipients will also get two checks in October, but not one in the calendar month of November, according to the SSA calendar.

Social Security benefits are paid on three different dates in June corresponding to recipient’s birthdays, although those who’ve received benefits prior to May 1997 or receive both Social Security and SSI will see payment earlier in the month.
Here’s those payment dates based on day of birth, according to SSA’s calendar:
How many people in California receive SSI payments?
Based on figures for March, more than 1.1. million Californians received SSI payments, with more than half eligible due to disability or blindness. In December 2023, over 6 million people in California received Social Security, according to the agency’s figures, with about 77% being retired workers.
How much money can you make and still get SSI?
Generally, SSI is for individuals who don’t earn more than $2,019 from work each month, although that income limit increases for couples and when parents apply for children, said the SSA.
