The Los Angeles Rams continued to prepare for the regular season on Saturday, holding their first practice at their Woodland Hills facility since OTAs. Their return, after holding training camp at Loyola Marymount University, signals a major point in the season as the team has several joint practices scheduled throughout preseason.
Those will give fans and the media a first look at the team’s star-studded roster, especially after their massive additions on defense. Those additions have been dominating since camp began, with The Athletic’s Nate Atkins reporting that the unit once again dictated practice.
“Oh yeah, defense was outstanding,” McVay said. “There was great coverage, some great individual plays, disrupting timing and rhythm. It was a great day for the defense. Offensively, they were able to run the football with some success, but throwing and catching was a real struggle. That was a real credit to great defensive play. I was really pleased with the way that our first defense looked.”
It’s a welcome sign for fans, as their secondary became a major issue at times last season, being exposed during the NFC Championship Game. Cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson have helped rewrite the narrative within the defensive secondary, while their safeties rival the NFL’s best.
With a report like that, some might believe the offense hasn’t been up to standards. However, the defense has been actively playing against the offense for weeks. Thus, it seems the team is firing on all cylinders as they deal with championship-or-bust expectations.
