Planning a Tahoe trip from Stockton? Ski season ending sooner than expected

Looking to hit the snow one last time this spring before the dog days of summer set in? There are plenty of nearby options, but many Tahoe resorts — the closest major ski destinations for Stockton‑area families — are shutting down earlier than expected this year, meaning your window for spring skiing is closing fast.

Here’s what to know if you were hoping to plan a quick spring ski run from Stockton:

Palisades Tahoe, one of the largest ski areas in North America, said it no longer plans to stay open until Memorial Day. Summerlike conditions have abruptly ended skiing at some resorts, and even those staying open through March now have wide swaths of bare terrain and fewer runs available for spring skiing.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe also moved its closing date up, from April 29 to April 12.

Diamond Peak in Incline Village will close on March 29, earlier than planned and ahead of its annual Easter egg hunt. Staying open through the weekend is proving difficult, and the locals’ mountain has already closed most of its terrain.

A storm forecast ahead of Easter could bring some snow, but it won’t be enough to make up for the record high temperatures that hit the region.

Palisades Tahoe said it will stay open as long as possible, but its previously advertised May 25 closing date is off the table. The resort currently has about 30% of its terrain open.

“We do not have a confirmed closing date but are targeting late April,” the resort said. “We are monitoring conditions, moving snow to maintain ski and ride access on key terrain, and have live music and a slew of spring events to round out the spring season.”

Resorts are increasing activities in an effort to attract skiers willing to navigate mud and sunshine, offering music, events and steep discounts. Palisades, Diamond Peak and others have spring daily specials at more than 50% off regular ticket prices.

Most resorts are also promoting discounted passes for next season.
