Palm Desert Aquatic Center lap pool to close until filter system is fixed in early 2026

The lap pool at the Palm Desert Aquatic Center has been closed again due to filtration issues and won’t reopen until facility-wide renovations are completed in early 2026.

The city of Palm Desert announced the latest closure Tuesday, Sept. 16, after the lap pool was intermittently closed earlier this summer due to filtration issues causing cloudy swimming water. The city then moved the lap pool to a weekends-only schedule in July to ease the stress on its filtration system, which was installed in 2011 when the facility first opened.

“Over time, regular wear, extreme weather, and aging materials, particularly damaged fiberglass seals around the filter tanks, have compromised the system’s ability to maintain clear water,” the city said in its update Tuesday. “While staff have implemented short-term solutions and even attempted repairs, these efforts have not been sufficient to support a consistent lap swim schedule.”

The city noted the recreational and splash pools will remain open until November, saying they are “less impacted” by the issues. The recreational pool is open for lap swimming from Mondays through Fridays, as well as early Saturday, and it’s available for families and children to use on Saturdays and Sundays. A full facility schedule can be found at pdpool.com.

The $4 million project to fix the pool’s filtration system will require a multi-week closure of the entire facility starting in mid-November, and the renovations are expected to take eight to 10 weeks.

“Once upgrades are complete, the Aquatic Center is expected to resume a full lap swim schedule with improved reliability and water quality,” the city said.
