An investigation was ongoing after officials discovered an “open container” of alcohol inside a car that crashed into opposing traffic in Victorville, leaving a man dead and five other people injured, law enforcement officials said.
The wreck took place about 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 19, along Village Drive between Llanada Avenue and Amargosa Road, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials said.
It involved a Toyota Camry and a Hyundai Elantra, according to a statement from the agency. The Toyota was traveling east on Village Drive.
“For reasons still under investigation, a blue Hyundai Elantra, drove westbound in the number one eastbound lane on Village Drive,” the statement said. “The vehicles collided head on in the number one eastbound lane of Village Drive.”
A passenger in the Hyundai died from his injuries at the scene. He was identified by San Bernardino County coroner’s officials as Kelvin J. Winston Jr., 34, of Victorville.
“An unidentified female passenger of the Hyundai Elantra was ejected from the vehicle,” according to the sheriff’s department statement.
She, along with the driver of the Hyundai, were rushed to trauma centers by helicopter in critical condition. Two children from the Hyundai were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, sheriff’s officials added.
“An open container of an alcoholic beverage was located in the center console of the Hyundai Elantra,” the statement said.
The driver of the Toyota suffered minor injuries, and was taken to Providence Saint Mary Medical Center, according to sheriff’s officials.
The investigation was ongoing.
