Every year, one team is declared the “winner” of the offseason. That doesn’t always translate to wins on the field, but the Los Angeles Rams are hoping their blockbuster moves of this spring will lead to the Lombardi Trophy coming back to Southern California.
With the additions of Myles Garrett, Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson and others, the Rams addressed some of their biggest needs to solidify a roster that made it to the NFC title game last season.
The Athletic’s Mike Jones ranked the biggest winners and losers of the NFL offseason and at the top of the list of winners was the Rams. How could they not be?
General manager Les Snead made the biggest splash of the offseason when he traded for Myles Garrett, the reigning defensive player of the year. That acquisition, coupled with the additions of Chiefs cornerbacks Trent McDuffie in another trade and Jaylen Watson in free agency, could put defensive coordinator Chris Shula’s unit over the top. With a defense like that, Sean McVay’s potent offense could further torment opponents, and the Rams could win another Super Bowl in their stadium this winter.
In addition to praising the moves to acquire their big three defenders, Jones also liked the fact that the Rams took Ty Simpson when they did to ensure the transition from Matthew Stafford to the next era is a smooth one. It also affords Simpson the necessary time to sit and learn from an all-time great before eventually taking over for the future Hall of Famer.
The Seattle Seahawks are still the team to beat in the NFC West as the defending division champs, but the Rams did everything right this offseason to put themselves in position to take down their rivals.
