New 49ers LB is already dealing with an injury

Former All-Pro linebacker Eric Kendricks joined the San Francisco 49ers practice squad before the bye week, but he wasn’t able to participate in at least the first part of his first official practice.

Kendricks was not at the portion of practice open to reporters according to the Athletic’s Matt Barrows. Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated before practice that Kendricks was a question mark for the day’s session.

“Would love to get Eric going,” Shanahan said. “He’s got a tight calf today, so I’m not sure how much he’s going to go today if he’s going to go. But, he’s working back in here. Hopefully it’s not too bad of a setback with that, but we’ll see him when he gets on the field.”

It’s not the end of the world for San Francisco that Kendricks is dealing with an injury, especially if Wednesday’s absence is precautionary.

The 49ers have a handful of depth pieces at linebacker who can fill reserve roles and special teams spots. However, Kendricks provides a ton of experience and the ability to fill the Mike LB spot that’s presently occupied by long-time special teams contributor Curtis Robinson.

If Kendricks isn’t able to get healthy enough to play by Sunday, the team can roll forward with Robinson in the middle while Tatum Bethune recovers from a high ankle sprain. Getting Kendricks in the mix defensively would be a nice upgrade for the 49ers, though and the sooner they can get him on the field the better.
