NCAA Football Oversight Committee to make significant changes to transfer portal

The NCAA Division I Bowl Subdivision Oversight Committee made recommendations for legislation involving the transfer portal on Thursday that will now will wait to be approved by the Division I Administrative Committee, according to the NCAA press release.

The press release stated that the recommended changes would limit when student athletes could enter the portal and when programs can send out written offers to those players. This could drastically change the way their portal is interacted with and how teams, like UCLA, have used it to recruit players in the past, i.e. Nico Iamaleava.

With the new recommendations, players are able to enter the portal during a 10-day period from Jan. 2-11, rather than the current 20-day period in December and 10-day period in April, according to the press release. December would also become a dead period for communicating with players, which means that programs will not be able to interact with players during that time.

UCLA was able to acquire Iamaleava, who entered the portal in April. Iamaleava’s breakup with the Tennessee Volunteers was that talk of the offseason, but that wouldn’t be the case if this recommendation was official and it became only a winter transfer portal. That sort of free publicity will be more difficult to come by with the NCAA limiting the transfer portal.

The press release also stated that the other big recommendation will change the “written offers of financial aid or settlement-related benefits” to high schoolers from starting on Aug. 1 for players entering their senior year to Nov. 15 of players’ senior year.

The Division I Administrative Committee is expected to vote on Oct. 1, according to the NCAA press release.
