Since trading away the 29th overall pick for Trent McDuffie, rumors about the Los Angeles Rams taking a first-round quarterback have quieted. There isn’t anyone worthy of taking with the No. 13 pick outside of Fernando Mendoza, and he’s a lock to go first overall.
Ty Simpson is widely viewed as QB2 in this class but taking him at 13 feels a bit early; 29 would’ve made much more sense.
The Rams have been linked to Simpson more than once this offseason, reportedly showing interest in the Alabama quarterback. That doesn’t mean they’re going to take him, but he’s someone they could at least consider.
Todd McShay of The Ringer has connected the Rams to Simpson already and this week, he said he believes they’re interested in the Alabama QB, but “probably on their terms.”
That’s an indication that they’d only consider taking him at No. 61 in Round 2.
“I think Arizona is the most intriguing fit,” McShay said on The Rich Eisen Show. “And I think the Rams have interest, but probably on their terms – meaning, what? Second round.”
ESPN’s Peter Schrager has Simpson falling all the way out of the first round in his latest mock draft – a mock draft based on what he’s been hearing about teams and prospects. It’s very possible he’ll slide out of Round 1, even as the perceived No. 2 quarterback in this class.
There’s also a chance a team could trade up from the second round into the first like the Giants did with Jaxson Dart last year, securing Simpson on a five-year contract instead of a four-year deal. That team probably won’t be the Rams, but if Simpson does tumble on draft day, they could be a team to watch as they search for Matthew Stafford’s successor – and an immediate backup QB behind him.
