The death of a man whose body was found near the Salton Sea is being investigated as a homicide, authorities said.

Someone reported discovering a possible dead body in the area of Plaza and Panorama avenues in Salton City, a community on the western edge of the Salton Sea, that Sunday morning. Responding deputies found the body and “noted the scene to be suspicious in nature,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

The area where Montes’ body was located borders a large swath of vacant land near the Salton Sea, maps of the area show.

The sheriff’s office said that “no further details will be released at this time to ensure the integrity of the case.”
