USC baseball's Mason Edwards named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year

It has been an incredible season for USC baseball ace Mason Edwards. Edwards finished the regular season with a record of 8-0, a remarkable 1.49 ERA, and 154 strikeouts to just 37 walks allowed.

This week, Edwards earned some major recognition for his remarkable campaign. On Tuesday, he was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, while also earning first team all-conference honors.

Edwards was not the only Trojan to be honored by the Big Ten. Joining him on the first team was fellow starting pitcher Grant Govel, who was also named to the conference’s all-defensive team. In addition, outfielder Jack Basseer and reliever Adam Troy earned second-team honors, while two-way player Diego Velazquez was named to the all-freshman team.

Edwards was also named one of 25 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, presented annually to the top player in all of college baseball. He is the first Trojan since Jeff Clement in 2005 to be named a Golden Spikes semifinalist, and is looking to become the first USC player to win the award since Mark Prior in 2001.

With the regular season now complete, Edwards and the Trojans will open up Big Ten Tournament play on Friday. USC is also in great position to earn a second consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament, which will begin next week.
