A Nissan Frontier pickup truck being driven by a 74-year-old Santa Ana man “traveled westbound in the number one eastbound lane of State Highway 18, toward Tao Road, the sheriff’s department said in a written statement. “The Nissan Frontier caused four other drivers into a five vehicle involved collision.”

A Dodge Durango, a Honda Accord and two Honda Civics were involved in the pile-up, along with the Nissan, officials said.

Paramedics took the driver of the Nissan, described as a 74-year-old Santa Ana man, to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later, authorities said. His identity was not released pending notification of family.

The drivers of two of the other cars involved in the crash were hospitalized in unknown condition.

The roadway surrounding the crash scene was shut down for several hours “while deputies processed the scene for evidence and interviewed witnesses,” the statement said.
