A Ventura man was charged with murder after allegedly shooting a woman outside his home earlier this week, according to Ventura County Superior Court records.
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office on July 21 charged Gregory Lide, 54, with murder, possession of a firearm as a felon and possession of a controlled substance with a firearm, court records show.
Lide also faces three special allegations, including that he has a serious prior or violent felony. If found true, special allegations can affect a sentence if the person is also convicted.
Lide has not yet entered a plea. His arraignment was continued to July 24.
Prosecutors allege that Lide and the victim, 34-year-old Brittney Stark, were together July 18 at his home near West Ramona and Olive Streets on the west side of Ventura.
The morning of July 19, Lide allegedly shot Stark as she approached her car parked outside his Ventura home, prosecutors said.
Around 3:30 a.m., a Ventura Police Department officer discovered the injured woman, and she died shortly after at Ventura County Medical Center, according to police.
Ventura police Sgt. Fabian Gutierrez said the Lide and Stark were acquaintances but their exact relationship is still unknown. Joey Buttitta, spokesperson for the DA’s office, said his agency’s investigators know the relationship between Lide and the victim but declined to disclose it.
The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office said the Santa Paula woman died of a gunshot wound to the head and determined her manner of death as homicide.Officers arrested Lide at his home the evening of July 19. He remains in custody at Ventura County jail and is being held without bail.
