Mac Jones wants to shut down any notion of a quarterback controversy with the San Francisco 49ers. Jones made it clear the team is still Brock Purdy’s, despite how well Jones played as a backup 2025.
“I’ve been on the other side of it. I’ve been the starter and there’s a little controversy,” Jones said on the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast. “I’ve been in Brock’s shoes. There’s no controversy. It is Brock’s team and I still believe that.”
Jones, who went 5-3 as a starter for the 49ers when Purdy missed games due to injury, added that he respects Purdy and that it was his job to play well in the starter’s absence.
“There’s a respect when you respect a guy who just got paid, earned it, played really well and got hurt,” Jones said. “It’s my job as a backup quarterback to go in and play well.”
This should close the door on any reports of a quarterback battle out of San Francisco. Jones had a great season as a backup, but he sounds perfectly fine to continue his role on the team while being ready to jump into the line of duty if Purdy goes down again.
