Before Kam Curl decided to return to the Los Angeles Rams on a three-year deal, he saw Les Snead and Sean McVay make a big move in the secondary. The Rams agreed to a deal sending Trent McDuffie to Los Angeles, acquiring the All-Pro cornerback from the Kansas City Chiefs.
Then, after Curl landed his $36 million deal last week, the Rams added Jaylen Watson on the first day of free agency Monday, agreeing to a $51 million contract with the former Chiefs corner.
Those two moves solidify Los Angeles’ secondary for years to come, pairing well with what the Rams already have at safety.
Curl made an appearance on NFL Network after officially signing his extension Tuesday, sharing his reaction and excitement for the Rams’ big swings at cornerback.
“I’ll see them in the building real soon, but just seeing those moves that the Rams made, it just got me excited to go play with those guys, those big playmakers,” he said. “And we’re just trying to have the No. 1 defense this season and I feel like with the guys we’ve got in the room now and on the defensive side of the ball, we’ve got a good chance to do that.”
Cornerback was arguably the Rams’ weakest position last season, and it cost them in the playoffs when Sam Darnold and the Seahawks moved the ball up and down the field. But with McDuffie and Watson now in the mix, the Rams have one of the better secondaries in the league – at least on paper.
Improved cornerback play will give the Rams a much better chance to contend in 2026, so long as the offense continues to produce at a high level and the special teams unit gets better, too.
