Los Angeles Lakers fans have been wondering what changes could be in store for the franchise now that Josh Kushner and Bob Iger are purchasing a majority share of it from Mark Walter. Those questions are especially intense given how quickly Walter is selling his share after officially purchasing it this past October.
It is natural to wonder what the primary intentions and top priority will be for Kushner and Iger. Kushner has been involved with the venture capital firm Thrive Capital and the health insurance company Oscar Health as a co-founder, while Iger had been the CEO of the Walt Disney Company for many years.
Iger told the California Post that right now, any speculation about what he and Kushner will do with the Lakers is “premature” because, according to him, the two have no plans as of now.
“We’re fans,” Iger said. “We respect the value that’s been created, both on the court and off. Our intention is to build this great franchise from a position of strength in many respects as an organization. We’re smart enough to know what we know and what we don’t know. It’s just premature to speculate at all about what we plan to do, because frankly, we haven’t made any plans yet. Again, we go into this with an appreciation of who the Lakers are. And we just want to build value from today on.”
This impending sale came completely out of the blue. Iger said the agreement “came together in three days,” but that he has already spoken to coach JJ Redick, as well as governor Jeanie Buss. Buss will reportedly retain her title as governor for the foreseeable future, which was something that was agreed to by Walter when he initially purchased his share of the team.
Luka Doncic reportedly is planning on having a virtual meeting with Kushner and Iger in the coming days. He will be hosting a minicamp for his Lakers teammates in his native Slovenia that will begin on Aug. 20.
