High Desert’s first Sam’s Club inches closer to groundbreaking

Sam’s Club is officially on its way to Hesperia, according to city leaders, who announced that the Planning Commission has recently approved the project.

City of Hesperia leaders on Wednesday, April 29, said the commission approved the big box project on April 9, clearing the path for one of the region’s most anticipated retail stores.

The Planning Commission’s approval includes certification of the final environmental impact report and adoption of a statement of overriding considerations under the California Environmental Quality Act, along with approval of a conditional use permit, according to city officials.

The recent announcement came after the city first revealed the project in November 2024. Since then, the project site has been quiet, with some residents wondering if the development had been abandoned.

The new Sam’s Club will sit on 25 acres along Amargosa Road, between Key Pointe Drive and the 15 Freeway, just north of Main Street.

The location will offer curbside pickup and express delivery in as little as one hour from its 165,000-square-foot warehouse retail facility that will also include a pharmacy and optical center, as well as a tire and battery center and fuel station.

Sam’s Club offers a wide variety of groceries, household essentials, clothing, home decor, furniture, electronics, computers and more.

“Sam’s Club is excited to join the Hesperia community and looks forward to serving members with great value, quality products and a convenient shopping experience designed to support families and businesses alike,” Regional Vice President Louie Santos said.

“The new Sam’s Club will bring a curated assortment of high-quality fresh foods and everyday essentials from its Member’s Mark private brand, along with market-leading technologies and services like Scan & Go.”

Sam’s Club is a membership-only and a division of Walmart.

In a previous statement, city leaders said once operational, Sam’s Club is expected to bring jobs, increase sales tax revenue and offer high-quality products and services to Hesperia and the High Desert.

From the High Desert, the nearest Sam’s Club store is located in San Bernardino, Ontario, and Riverside.

Hesperia Mayor Brigit Bennington said she welcomed the new store.

“Residents have been asking for more shopping choices, and I’m happy to say this project delivers,” she said. “Sam’s Club will bring new jobs, new services and more convenience for families across not only Hesperia but the entire region. It’s a major investment in our community and we’re excited to see it moving forward.”

Construction timelines and an opening date will be announced as the project progresses, city officials said.

There are nearly 600 Sam’s Clubs across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, according to the company, with each store averaging approximately 136,000 square feet.
