Former Los Angeles Rams defensive back Tre Tomlinson was waived by the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday. Tomlinson, a member of the Rams’ 2023 draft class, was unable to break into a defensive secondary that was going through its own rebuild at the time.
Tomlinson requested his release from the Rams following his second season, after it became clear his opportunities to gain playing time would be unlikely. Tomlinson signed with the 49ers last offseason, spending the year on injured reserve.
Tomlinson was a member of the 2022 TCU Horned Frogs squad that made it to the National Championship game, before losing to Stetson Bennett, Warren McClendon Jr., and the Georgia Bulldogs. Tomlinson won the Jim Thorpe Award in 2022 for being the nation’s top collegiate defensive back, was a first-team All-American, and a three-time All-Big 12 selection.
Tomlinson was a sixth-round selection by the Rams. He is now able to seek opportunities elsewhere.
