There were 29,414 votes cast in the race for the Joe Orthodontics High School Athlete of the Week poll.
Hesperia softball player Jenevy Hidalgo ended with 44.25% of total votes cast by Daily Press readers.
The junior received 13,015 votes, beating out 14 other high school athletes from across the High Desert.
To earn a spot on the ballot, Hidalgo went 2 for 3 in a loss to Apple Valley on April 22. She followed that by going 3 for 4 with a home run, seven RBIs, and two runs in a loss to Sultana on April 24.
In the voting, Hidalgo beat Sultana’s Lily Lugo, who received 31.57% at 9,285 total votes.
The nominees were selected based on performances between April 20 to 25.
Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.
Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week’s games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.
