Golden West wrestling sweeps CIF Central Section duals championships

The 2025-26 Central Section high school sports season is underway.

Feb. 7

Girls wrestling

Golden West captures Central Section Division I duals championship: Golden West defeated Buchanan 42-37 in the finals to win the 2026 Central Section Division I duals team championship in Morro Bay.

Seven different Trailblazers posted an individual victory:

Novelo, Miller and Torres won their respective matches by pin.

At one point, Golden West trailed Buchanan 28-6 but rallied back to earn a section duals title. The Trailblazers also had duals team victories over Sunnyside, 63-18, and Golden Valley, 54-29.

Golden West is coached by head coach Jesse Perez.

Boys wrestling

Golden West sweeps duals section championships: Golden West outlasted Sanger West 42-36 in the final to win the CIF Central Section Division IV duals team championship in Morro Bay.

Six different Trailblazers won their individual finals matches in their respective weight classes:

Enriquez, Gutierrez, Lopez, Sierra and Chavez-Sarabia all won by fall.

Golden West also had a 44-27 team win over Roosevelt.

The Trailblazers are led by first-year head coach Angel Olea.

Feb. 10

Boys basketball

Tulare Western 71, Tulare Union 69: The Mustangs (12-16, 5-5) denied the Tribe (24-4, 7-3) an outright West Yosemite League title in the double-overtime victory.

Tulare Western’s Leo Lemus scored a game-high 28 points, including a pair of clutch free throws with 3.8 seconds left in the game to seal the win.

The Mustangs also received points from Dez Bello (11 points), Dylan Reed (five), Amarion Taylor (17), Grant Crawford (two), Devin Hicks (two), Santiago Alvarez (two), and Gabrail McCadden (two).

Despite the loss, Tulare Union concluded the regular season as WYL co-champions, sharing this season’s title with Hanford and Lemoore — who all finished league play with identical 7-3 records.

Brayden Stevenson led the Tribe with 23 points. Demaje Riley added 17 points, and Keanu Kennedy had 12 points. Isaiah Gray also finished with double-digit points, netting 11.

Central Valley Christian 76, Immanuel 59: The Cavaliers (24-4, 8-0) clinched an undefeated Tri-County Conference championship.

Carter Hiemstra led CVC with 26 points. Grant Hyde canned 14 points, and Jayden Bergman dropped 11 points.

Hiemstra had an outstanding shooting night, draining 7-of-10 3-pointers. He also had seven rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

Girls basketball

Mission Oak 44, Dinuba 33: The Hawks (23-5, 10-0) wrapped up the regular season as undefeated West Yosemite League champions.

Aiyana Murray netted 17 points to lead Mission Oak. Braelyn Serpa had 15 points. Victoria Nwanna registered six points.

Tulare Union 46, Tulare Western 39: The Tribe posted their first 20-win season since 2019.

Tulare Union’s Jazzy Miller recorded a team-high 12 points. Kayloni Cox drained 11 points, and Kaiden Valdez had nine points.

Tulare Western’s Emily Toledo had 15 points.

Feb. 11

Girls basketball

CVC 33, Exeter 19: The Cavaliers (14-8, 8-0) captured their first league championship in 15 years, winning an outright Tri-County Conference-Sequoia title.

CVC had contributions from Ally Lane (13 points, six rebounds, four steals), Kate Verhoeven (nine points, 15 rebounds), Alivya Cabasa (four points, eight boards), Lily Blain (three points), Aubrey Westra (two points, six rebounds), and Caroline Mihalcin (two points, four assists).

In a 50-29 win over Washington Union on Feb. 6, Verhoeven (18 points, 16 rebounds) and Cabasa (14 points, 13 rebounds) each had a double-double. Lane added 11 points and six rebounds in that victory.
