Sheriff’s department spokeswoman Mara Rodriguez said a Nissan Altima and a Hummer were both traveling north on Kiowa Road prior to the impact.

The Nissan struck the Hummer from behind, causing the driver of the Hummer to lose control, she said.

Two men who were inside the Hummer were hospitalized for treatment, according to Rodriguez. The driver, initially described as a 44-year-old Apple Valley man, succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

His identity was not yet released Sunday.

A 22-year-year-old Victorville man who was riding as a passenger in the Hummer was hospitalized in stable condition, sheriff’s offiicals said.

Deputies arrested the driver of the Nissan, identified as 23-year-old Exon Herrera-Hernandez of Apple Valley, on suspicion of drunken driving and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, county booking records show.

The investigation was ongoing. No further details were available.

Bail for the suspect was set at $250,000 pending an initial court appearance.
