Desert Hot Springs police locate minor linked to social media threats on schools

Desert Hot Springs police have located the minor who they say made threats on social media to three local schools last week, prompting increased police presence on campuses as a safety precaution as investigators determined the threats were not credible.

The Desert Hot Springs Police Department did not identify the minor or state whether they were arrested.

Police also did not disclose the content of the threats made on Sept. 10, but three Instagram stories from the same account appeared to refer to two middle schools and the high school in Desert Hot Springs. One story showed an image of guns on the floor and mentioned “DSMS” seemingly in reference to Desert Springs Middle School. Another mentioned “PHMS” seemingly in reference to Painted Hills Middle School and “DHSHS” in reference to Desert Hot Springs High School.

In response to the posts, police and Palm Springs Unified School District security increased their presence at the schools on Sept. 11 and Sept. 12 to be cautious despite believing they were not credible threats.
