The Chargers enter the 2026 season with high hopes.
Los Angeles revamped their team in a major way this offseason and is expected to take the next step after years of shortcomings. Much is expected of the Chargers, but there are some question marks across their positional groups.
ESPN’s Mike Clay ranked each NFL team from best to worst by position group, and the Chargers received mixed rankings.
The highest the Chargers were ranked was the safety position group (No. 3), and the lowest was the cornerback group (No. 30). Overall, the Bolts were ranked No. 15.
The Chargers appeared four times in the top 10 for position groups such as safety, quarterback (No. 10), offensive line (No. 10) and edge rusher (No. 7).
Los Angeles was also in the bottom half in several positions, including running back (No. 17), wide receiver (No. 28), tight end (No. 20), interior defensive line (No. 23), linebacker (No. 27), and cornerback.
The safety room is the highest-ranked, and that comes as no surprise, considering the Chargers possess arguably the best at the position in Derwin James Jr. James is set to enter his eighth season in the league and, from the jump, has established himself as one of the premier players at that position.
As for the Chargers’ cornerback room, it’s no secret why ESPN ranked it as the weakest. That room consists of Donte Jackson, Tarheeb Still and Cam Hart. Those three are expected to get the majority of the workload.
While they may not have the star power in that room compared to some of their other position rooms, they should have continuity and chemistry on their side. That’s something to lean on.
