Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel showered running back Omarion Hampton with high praise during his media availability, crowning him as the player with “the most growth of any player” since the offseason program began.
McDaniel emphasized that Hampton’s intense focus during his five-week summer break was visibly apparent on the field. He lauded his development, describing him as “completely obsessed and focused” on mastering the playbook’s fine details alongside running backs coach Max McCaffrey.
McDaniel issued a blunt assessment of Hampton’s physical tools. “Nobody wants to tackle that guy,” he said. “That is a massive human moving very fast.”
McDaniel is working with Hampton on a key technical point: reducing the times he stops his feet and instead trusting his power when running lanes tighten. Hampton has the frame to run through contact but sometimes looks for elusive cuts rather than lowering his shoulder. Hampton himself relayed similar advice from McDaniel, saying that running full speed will make him difficult to bring down.
Hampton’s rookie season was cut short by an ankle injury, limiting him to nine games and 545 rushing yards. With a healthier offensive line and McDaniel’s scheme emphasizing the run, Hampton is positioned for a productive sophomore season.
