The Chargers and safety Derwin James made history Tuesday.
James signed a landmark three-year, $76.5 million deal with the Bolts, making him the highest-paid safety in the league for the second time in his career.
James is set to earn more than $25 million per year and is guaranteed to earn $57.5 million. He is arguably the best safety in the league as he’s the only defensive back with 30-plus quarterback hits, 30-plus tackles for loss and 30-plus passes defended over the last five seasons.
James has gotten major praise for his performance with the landmark extension, but he’s also known for his character off the field.
NFL insider Daniel Jeremiah handed James a huge compliment following the news of the historic deal.
“So happy for Derwin James. Some players make it real easy to pay them top dollar. I’ve been working in and around the NFL for 20+ yrs & I’ll put his positive energy up against anyone that’s played in that window. I’ve never seen him have a bad day,” Jeremiah wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
This comes as no surprise given the respect James has garnered in the Chargers locker room.
The organization is looking for its first playoff win in the Jim Harbaugh era and James is set to be one of the key veterans for the squad.
