Cameron Carr: 'I think I was overlooked, so I got a lot to prove'

So far in summer league play, Cameron Carr, the incoming rookie guard for the Los Angeles Lakers, has looked like an absolute steal after he was the No. 24 pick in last month’s NBA draft. He has consistently scored in double figures, and while his 3-point shooting has been inconsistent, he has shown a clear ability to score reliably in catch-and-shoot situations.

Carr was expected to go higher in the draft than he actually did. But when he fell, the Lakers pounced and swapped the rights to their No. 25 pick for the rights to Carr, who was taken by the New York Knicks. Some see him becoming, at the very least, a high-level 3-and-D player, if not a starter or even a star in the future.

After Thursday’s blowout win over the Chicago Bulls, Carr said that being overlooked gives him a constant source of motivation.

“At the end of the day, I feel like you’ve got to have fire under your feet,” he said. “Every time I step onto the court, I’m motivated to go out and do my job. I think I was overlooked, so I’ve got a lot to prove.”

Over the four games the Lakers have played so far in the main Las Vegas summer league, Carr is averaging 18.3 points on 46.5% overall shooting and 22.2% 3-point shooting (he missed one game due to a thumb injury).

Fans will get at least one more opportunity to watch the super athletic Baylor University product when the Lakers take on the Golden State Warriors during the semifinal round of the summer league playoffs on Saturday.
