California Assembly District 38 primary race results

In the race for state Assembly District 38, incumbent Steve Bennett took a commanding lead to challenger Michael MacDonald.

In the first round of returns, Bennett received 30,637 votes or 70.42% to MacDonald’s 12,867 or 29.58%.

Both are Democrats living in Ventura. A longtime politician, Bennett has served in the seat since 2020. MacDonald, Ventura city clerk, has not previously held public office.

What to know about the California Assembly District 38 race?

The district represents about 485,700 residents in west Ventura County, including Oxnard, Ventura, part of Camarillo, Santa Paula, Port Hueneme, Fillmore, Ojai and neighboring unincorporated communities.

In California’s voting system, the top two vote-getters will advance to the November election. When a race has just two candidates, both continue to the general election.
