Browns insider: Myles Garrett wasn't 'necessarily loved by his teammates'

When the Los Angeles Rams made the decision to trade for Myles Garrett, they would have to part with the vocal leader of their defense, Jared Verse.

Verse was a beloved member of the locker room and as the voice of their defense, he was always making his teammates feel special, helping form those bonds beyond the field. Cleveland Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot recently spoke about Verse and stated that she expects Verse to be the same way with his new team.

Cabot also spoke about Garrett, sharing an interesting point about Garrett’s final season in Cleveland. Cabot states that Garrett wasn’t a beloved teammate, with some in the locker room allegedly taking issue with Garrett’s demands for a trade during the 2025 offseason.

“When you talk about the fact that [fans] haven’t seen guys write or say a lot about Myles, I think that there are some reasons for that,” Cabot stated on the Orange and Brown Talk: Cleveland Browns Podcast. “If you look back to the previous year when he went all around the Super Bowl asking to get the heck out of Dodge, I don’t think that necessarily said ‘team building’ to a lot of guys. I’ve also been told that even though Myles was very well-respected and, in some cases, revered, he wasn’t necessarily loved by his teammates. He didn’t inspire that warm and fuzzy, big, booming kind of love that some people have for their teammates.”

If Cabot is correct in her reporting, this explains why Garrett was willing to waive his no-trade clause as quickly as he did. This report also raises the question of whether Garrett can be the leader that Verse was for the Rams. Considering the impact Verse’s presence had on the overall unit, this might be an underlying storyline if things do not go right early.

For Garrett, he wants to win, and being surrounded by winners in Los Angeles will likely lead to a better locker room situation than the one he left in Cleveland. As for now, Garrett and the Rams have been all smiles. Perhaps this is a situation where Verse and Garrett are simply better suited for the situations they currently occupy.
