Chemistry and cohesiveness will be very important to the Los Angeles Lakers this coming season, especially since they have a lot of new players and lack a starting-level two-way wing or forward. So far, it looks like they’re off to a decent start after they reportedly held a mini-camp a couple of weeks ago during the NBA summer league in Las Vegas.
During summer league play, rookie guard Cameron Carr, the No. 24 pick in June’s draft, and incoming second-year forward Adou Thiero showed promise and played very well at times. Thiero recently revealed that he helped out Carr by giving the Baylor University product some advice, per Benjamin Royer of the Southern California News Group.
“I feel like we’ve just been pushing each other and I’m helping him out with some of the tips I found out and everything,” Thiero said. “Letting him know those things early. I didn’t really have someone to tell me that during Summer League (last year). I wasn’t playing Summer League. So just trying to let him know some of the stuff that I learned throughout last year, just trying to give him some of those thoughts.”
Lakers fans have relatively high hopes for both Carr and Thiero, especially since the team lacks legitimate two-way wings, and both men could become exactly that. Carr struggled with his shooting in summer league, but he still averaged 18 points a game.
Thiero, meanwhile, put up 15.4 points on 55.3% shooting, 6.2 rebounds, three assists and 1.8 steals a game in summer league play. As the games wore on, he started to show better control during his forays to the basket, as well as a greater willingness to kick the basketball out when he didn’t have a shot opportunity on the drive.
He still has lots of room for improvement when it comes to his perimeter shooting, free throw shooting and perhaps his man-to-man defense. But he will be someone to watch in training camp this October, as will Carr.
