49ers use final 3rd-round pick on national champion running back

The San Francisco 49ers used the No. 90 overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft on Indiana running back Kaelon Black.

It’s certainly not a surprise the 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan selected a running back on Day 2 of the draft. They’ve done that in the past with running backs Trey Sermon and Tyrion Davis-Price. They’ve also used fourth-round picks on Joe Williams and Isaac Guerendo on Day 3. Last year they picked Jordan James out of the University of Oregon in the fifth round.

Black spent his first four seasons at James Madison before finishing his college career with two seasons at Indiana. He didn’t break out until last season for the national champion Hoosiers when he posted 187 carries, for 1,039 yards and 10 touchdowns. All of those marks were career highs.

He finished his college career with 15 starts in 56 games. Black posted 2,261 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on 443 carries. He also hauled in 52 catches for 473 yards and six touchdowns.
