49ers backup QB Mac Jones says he can still be a starter in the league

Mac Jones isn’t ready to close the book on being an NFL starting quarterback, even as he heads into a season as Brock Purdy’s backup with the San Francisco 49ers.

Jones, who spent last season filling in for an injured Purdy and helped keep the 49ers’ 2025 season afloat, said on the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast that he still believes he has more to offer as a starter, even if his current role is behind Purdy.

“I know that I can play higher than just being on the team,” Jones said. “I can be a starter, and this year, if I’m going to be a backup, that’s great. You’re judged on what you do when you’re out there. Whether you’re a backup or starter, it doesn’t matter. Whatever you put on tape is on tape.

“I know I can play and I do want to get that chance again to run a team and be that guy.”

Jones has bounced around the league since being a first-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2021, landing with the Jacksonville Jaguars before finding a home in San Francisco. Last season, he stepped in for Purdy and played well enough to spark trade rumors. Jones finished the season with a 5-3 record as a starter, including a 69.6 percent completion rate, 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.

While Jones ultimately wasn’t traded, he’s noted recently that he’s happy to remain in San Francisco and hone his craft more. Jones has one year left on his deal and should garner a lot of attention from QB-needy teams during the 2027 offseason.

For now, Jones said he’s approaching his role with the understanding that his performance will dictate what comes next, whether that’s in San Francisco or elsewhere down the line.
