1 dog dies, 1 lives in Somis structure fire
A structure fire in an agricultural area of Somis Oct. 12 left one dog dead, authorities said.
The fire in the 4700 block of Sand Canyon Road was reported around 1:15 p.m. with two dogs inside, according to initial fire reports. Arriving crews saw smoke coming from a multi-unit, residential structure, officials with the Ventura County Fire Department said on social media.
The area is not far from Balcom Canyon Road off Highway 118 amid agricultural fields and equestrian facilities.
Crews quickly searched inside, and firefighters found two dogs unconscious, fire officials said. One was revived but the second died from its injuries, according to county fire reports.
Firefighters also worked on the fire from the roof where smoke was emitting.
The residents were not at home at the time of the blaze. No firefighters or civilians were otherwise injured, fire officials said.
Oxnard Fire and Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies also responded to the blaze. Crews stayed on scene for several hours.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.
4 nabbed in Simi Valley burglary
Three Los Angeles-area men and a 17-year-old believed tied a residential burglary of more than $110,000 in cash, watches and jewelry in Simi Valley were arrested Oct. 10, authorities said.
The Simi Valley Police Department said it arrested a 46-year-old, a 39-year-old, a 27-year-old and the teen with the assistance of Los Angeles Police. A search by detectives of their vehicle turned up the goods, according to a news release from Simi police.
The three men have since been booked into Ventura County jail on suspicion of felony conspiracy to commit a crime and burglary, according to jail records. The teen was booked into Ventura County Juvenile Hall.
The 46-year-old and 27-year-old were being held on $200,000 bail. The 39-year-old could not be released on bail because he also faces two felony burglary charges from an out of county warrant.
The three men are set to appear in Ventura County Superior Court at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 14, jail records show.
