On Friday during OTAs, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff praised the creativity of new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing.
“He’s got a great feel for what it’s like to run an offense and to run a room and how to balance volume with intentionally attacking a defense and trying to find yourself in the right plays.
“It’s hard, man. It’s a lot more to it than just drawing up plays, and I think he’s got that extra part to it as well as the play stuff’s great, so he’s great, but the part that is outside of the Xs and Os. I think he does a hell of a job with. It’s been a lot of fun,” Goff said.
Goff was asked in a follow-up what the extra part of Petzing’s leadership is that the five-time NFL Pro Bowler was referencing.
“It’s communication. It’s knowing when to balance simple, easy concepts with complexities that we can all handle and then knowing how to install and how to keep it fun and keep the energy up and then how to hold guys accountable and lead and be able to be in front of a room, and he’s great at it. He’s awesome, and it’s a lot of fun to work with him,” Goff said.
Although the Lions are still very early in OTAs, with no pads and practices mainly schematic run-throughs, Goff’s confidence in Petzing’s playcalling is a positive sign for the franchise.
