Michigan’s 2025-26 fishing season starts today and anglers can get started by purchasing a fishing license now.
The Department of Natural Resources announced earlier this month that licenses for the upcoming season, starting April 1, are on sale.
Michigan is home to 155 different kinds of fish. In addition to licenses, the DNR also released its 2025-26 regulation book outlining catch limits and other information. Some fish, such as sunfish, are open to catch year-round while others, such as walleye, bass and sturgeon, have specific seasons.
Here’s what to know about fishing licenses:
When does the 2025-26 fishing season start
While the season starts April 1, the statewide trout opener and the Lower Peninsula inland walleye and northern pike seasons all open April 26.

Fishing licenses purchased now are valid through March 31, 2026.

How to purchase a fishing license
Fishing licenses can be purchased at Michigan.gov/DNRLicenses or by downloading the Michigan DNR Hunt Fish app and purchasing through the app. You also may purchase licenses in person at a variety of stores.
For Michiganders who regularly renew their license, select auto-renewal at checkout to automatically buy future licenses as they become available.
When can I fish for free this year?
From June 7-8, the need for fishing licenses will be waived. Residents and out-of-state visitors may enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes waters for all species of fish that are in season.
A recreation passport will not be required for entry into state parks and boating access sites during Free Fishing Weekend.
