This week’s poll features five players – four football and one soccer – who had standout-performances during the week of Oct. 12-18.

Voting will be open until noon on Friday, Oct. 24.

Here are the nominees (listed in alphabetical order by last name):

Santiago Huerta, Melvindale, soccer

Huerta and the Melvindale Cardinals captured their first district championship in six years after defeating Detroit Cesar Chavez, 4-1, on Wednesday, Oct. 15. The senior midfielder recorded two goals in the championship game. He also had two assists in the team’s 2-1 semifinal win over Gibraltar Carlson on Monday, Oct. 14.

Aerrion Gray, Southgate Anderson, football

The sophomore quarterback led the Titans to a second-half comeback and defeated Taylor, 35-12, on Friday, Oct. 17, in the team’s homecoming game. Gray had nine rushes for 87 yards and three touchdowns.

Mahti Gwilly, Utica, football

Gwilly continues to showcase why he was named as one of the Free Press’ top running backs at the beginning of the season. The Utica senior led the charge in the team’s 26-17 win over Macomb Dakota on Friday, when he ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries.

Marcus Jennings, Cass Tech, football

Jennings made some big plays for Cass Tech during the team’s 35-19 victory over Detroit King on Friday at Ford Field for the program’s fourth consecutive Public School League Blue Division championship. The Pittsburgh commit finished with 12 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery.

Montrell Parker, Hazel Park, football

The senior running back’s stellar performance wasn’t enough for Hazel Park as the team fell, 38-26, to St. Clair on Friday. Parker led the Vikings’ offense as he rushed for 370 yards and four touchdowns on his 29 carries.
