Vote for the News-Review's Harbor Brenn Insurance Athlete of the Week: Aug. 25-31

It’s time to vote for the Petoskey News-Review Athlete of the Week brought to you by Harbor Brenn Insurance Agencies and Auto Owners insurance!

All results come from Monday, Aug. 25 through Sunday, Aug. 31 from Emmet and Charlevoix Counties.

This is the first athlete of the week of the fall sports season.

Vote for these athletes from Tuesday, Sept. 2 to 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 5.

Look for another Athlete of the Week brought to you by Harbor Brenn Insurance Agencies and Auto Owners insurance to start back up next week and throughout the fall season.

Charles Kelly, Charlevoix soccer 

Kelly helped bring in Charlevoix’s first win of the season last week with a hat-trick three goals against Kalkaska. He also had an assist in another win over Kingsley. 

Jace Shaw, Petoskey football 

As a defensive end, Shaw isn’t likely to get many interceptions, though he came up huge Friday in Greenville with one that sealed the victory for the Northmen in the game’s final minutes. 

Katey Buchanan, Harbor Springs golf 

Buchanan earned the medalist honors in Grayling with a round of 78 and better yet, she carded a hole-in-one on the the No. 3 hole. She was also top 10 in the Petoskey Invite. 

Owen Hewitt, Boyne City football 

Hewitt led offensively for the Ramblers with 85 yards rushing against Alpena, then caught a 33-yard touchdown and finishes with five tackles and a half sack defensively. 

Mary Halberg, Charlevoix volleyball/XC

Halberg is proving to be quite an athlete in Charlevoix. In volleyball, Halberg went 27 of 29 on serve receive, had 19 kills and five aces in a home quad, then also ran a new PR in the East Jordan cross country invite, running a seventh place 20:56.0. 

Thaddeus Cosens, Harbor Springs football 

Cosens was huge for the Rams to help end a 26-game losing streak in the opener. He ran for 67 yards and three touchdowns, then also had six tackles and a pass breakup that saved a touchdown defensively. 

Emma Mitas, Petoskey volleyball 

Mitas has been a standout all across the court this season and came through with 19 kills, 21 digs, seven blocks and two aces to help bring in success for Petoskey in Cedar Springs last week. 

Collin Jess, Charlevoix football 

Jess was all over the field Thursday in Charlevoix win over Unionville-Sebewaing. He finished 5 of 10 passing for 99 yards and a touchdown, then ran for 76 yards and the score. He also had four tackles and an interception defensively.
