Clayton J. Devol, 48, of Temperance was killed in a traffic crash that was reported at 9:18 p.m. May 16. The crash occurred at the intersection of Secor Road and St. Anthony Road in Bedford Township.
Preliminary investigation show Arnold L. Meiring, 68, of Temperance was driving a black 2014 Chevrolet Silverado northbound on Secor Road. As Meiring entered the intersection of St. Anthony Road to turn west, he was struck by a black unknown make and model off-road motorcycle operated by Devol, who was traveling southbound, according to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
After the collision, Meiring’s vehicle came to a controlled stop on the north side of St. Anthony Road. Devol was thrown from the motorcycle, coming to rest on the east side of Secor Road next to the vehicle, which then caught fire.
Devol was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Additionally, the off-road motorcycle was not equipped with a headlight or taillight and was not authorized for roadway use, the sheriff department said.
Meiring was wearing a safety belt and the airbags in his vehicle deployed. Meiring was not injured and was released on scene.
Members of the Bedford Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit and Chaplain Program assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by Lt. Brian Quinn and Deputy Sheriffs Cody Carena and Hunter Chirillo of the Traffic Services Division.
