NORTH SHADE TWP. — A St. Johns teenager was killed and three other people were injured in a head-on crash near Carson City over the Christmas holiday.
The crash happened about 6:40 p.m. Dec. 26, the Gratiot County Sheriff’s Office said.
A 17-year-old girl from St. Johns was driving west on M-57 near South Ferris Road when she tried to pass a semi truck and crashed into an eastbound vehicle, police said in a Dec. 30 news release. The two vehicles then collided with the tanker of the semi rig.
Four people were taken to University of Michigan Health – Sparrow Carson City, where a 15-year-old St. Johns boy died from his injuries, police said. His name was not immediately released.
“Deteriorating road conditions and driver inexperience” appeared to be factors in the crash, which remained under investigation, sheriff’s officials said.
Michigan State Police, the Carson City police and fire departments and the Maple Rapids and Gratiot Emergency Services Authority were among the responding agencies.
