The tacos and tequila will start flowing a day later as the annual Royal Oak Taco Fest cancels its Thursday kick-off due to the weather forecast of extreme heat.
Southeast Michigan is under an extreme heat warning that took effect Tuesday morning and will be in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday. Festival goers who purchased advance tickets for Thursday, July 2, can use their passes any other day of the festival, which will be 11 a.m.-11 p.m. July 3-4 and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. July 5.
“From the first bite to the final encore, the festival is ready to roll into the weekend with a full lineup beginning Friday, along with an added focus on comfort, shade and hydration,” said festival producer Jon Witz in a statement announcing the change. “From tacos and tequila to live music, cultural programming and family experiences, Royal Oak Taco Fest is set for a high-energy Fourth of July weekend designed to keep the celebration going strong throughout the entire event.”
Friday through Sunday, the Royal Oak Taco Fest will have a dozen misting stations and expanded tenting with cooling fans, plus plenty of shaded areas and access to the Centennial Commons splash pad. Cans of water will be distributed to guests who arrive noon-6 p.m. on Friday.
Tickets to the event are $12 at the gate for adults and $5 for ages 6-10. Food and drink are sold a la carte, but the admission includes entertainment like bands, wrestling, America 250 programming and taco-eating competitions.
The outdoor festival is east of Main Street between 11 Mile and Fourth Street in downtown Royal Oak. Visit royaloaktacofest.com or call (248) 541-7550 for more information.
