Roundup of Monroe County Region athletic events for Monday, April 13

New Boston Huron’s baseball team and Airport’s softball squad are setting the pace in the Huron League.

Both moved to 9-0 overall with impressive victories on Monday, April 13.

Huron junior Cash Moczydlowsky tossed his second career no-hitter as the Chiefs blanked Airport 4-0.

“He was one walk away from a perfect game,” said Huron coach Phil Yancey. “Basically, everything was working – the fastball, the curve. He threw around 80 pitches.”

He recorded 11 of the 21 outs on strikeouts.

Huron broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when Jakob Furkas singled to right, moved to second when Max Morse was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Aiden Sainato.

Moczydlowsky, Furkas and Morse also drove in runs as Huron ran its record to 9-0.

“They’re on fire,” Yancey said of his team. “We’ve finally got some offense to go with our pitching.”

Brooklyn Martin was perfect in the circle for Airport’s softball team with eight strikeouts in a 15-0 mercy-rule win over Jefferson in five innings.

She had plenty of support as the offense cranked out 17 hits led by Jillian Baker with four and Martin and Brityn Duffy three each.

Baker drove in four runs.

“But we played outstanding as a team on both sides of the ball,” Airport coach Jess Irwin said. “Brooklyn went right at their hitters and our defense made plays behind her.”

It’s no surprise that the Jets, who reached the Division 2 state semifinals last spring, are off to a terrific start.

“It is often difficult to make a lineup for this team, which is a great problem to have,” Irwin said. “We have three kids in Martin, Alayna McDaniel and Julia Dyson who are all having a fantastic start to the season in the circle. When given opportunities they are all finding ways to get the job done.

“Defensively behind them, they have some of the best support I have ever seen in all of my years coaching. This group is truly something special to watch.”
