The Eaton Rapids wrestling team concluded its season as the state runner-up.
The Greyhounds suffered a 62-4 loss to top seed Lowell in the Division 2 state championship match on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Wings Event Center.
The finish was the best for Eaton Rapids since finishing as the Division 2 state runner-up in 2015 to Lowell. It marks the second straight season a team from Greater Lansing finished as the Division 2 runner-up. Fowlerville was the state runner-up last season.
Maiko Sherman won by major decision at 106 pounds for the line victory for No. 6 seed Eaton Rapids in the championship dual.
Eaton Rapids reached the state title match with a 39-30 win over No. 2 seed Three Rivers in the semifinal. Brayden Thorn picked up a key win by fall at 132 pounds to help seal the win.
DUNDEE 63, LAKEWOOD 6
Lakewood had its run end with a Division 3 state semifinal loss to top seed Dundee. Dakota Harmer won by fall at 106 to earn the lone win for No. 4 seed Lakewood in the dual. The Vikings close the season with a 23-8 record.
GYMNASTICS
Haslett United had the best finish of area teams and placed third in a regional hosted by East Lansing on Saturday, Feb. 28. Haslett finished with a team score of 139.750.
East Lansing Catholic DeWitt placed fourth with a score of 139.325.
Hartland was the regional champion and had a score of 147.750.
Haslett United had the Division 2 all-around champion in Phoebe Elder, who had a score of 36.325. East Lansing’s Taliyah Andrew was second in the all-around with a score of 36.15 followed by Grand Ledge’s Baylee Bartlett placing third (35.2).
COMPETITIVE CHEER
DIVISION 2 AT FOREST HILLS NORTHERN
Mason finished as the regional champion and had a score of 771.36 on Saturday, Feb. 28. The Bulldogs had the best score in each round, scoring 231.50 in round one, a 223.26 in the second round before closing with a score of 316.50.
Middleville Thornapple Kellogg was the runner-up with a score of 759.58.
DeWitt also competed at the regional and placed 12th.
DIVISION 4 AT NOVI
Pewamo-Westphalia had the top scores in each of the first two rounds on its way to capturing a regional title. The Pirates finished with a score of 754.08, while Hanover-Horton was the runner-up with a score of 738.66.
P-W had a total of 230.40 in its opening round and a score of 218.68 in the second round.
Ovid-Elsie was the next best area team at the regional and finished seventh. Leslie placed 10th and Stockbridge was 11th.
DIVIISION 3 AT HUDSONVILLE
Lakewood and Charlotte are headed to the state finals after finishing in the top four at their regional.
Lakewood was the runner-up and had a team score of 749.60. The Vikings had the top score in round one at the regional (229.70). Charlotte was third with a score of 746.70.
BOWLING
DIVISION 3
Olivet senior Michael Fitzner capped his high school bowling career with a state runner-up at the MHSAA state finals.
Fitzner, who reached match play after placing 10th in qualifying, suffered a 442-398 loss in the bracket play final. Fitzner made it to the championship match with a win by five pins in the semifinal.
On the girls side, Ovid-Elsie junior Brooke Pugsley reached match play before being edged by 10 pins in her opening match. Pugsley placed 12th in qualifying while being the lone area girls bowler in Division 3 to reach match play.
DIVISION 2 AT CENTURY LANES
Portland freshman Wyatt Spear and DeWitt junior George Rollings each finished in the top 16 and qualified for match play at the MHSAA finals. Rollins had the second-best score in qualifying and won his opening match before suffering a 437-346 loss in the quarterfinal. Spear lost in his opening match.
Portland junior Savannah Sutton was the lone girls bowler to qualify for bracket play in Division 2. She won her opening match by 16 pints before falling in the quarterfinal.
DIVISION 4 AT SKORE LANES
Ithaca junior Estes Purvis finished seventh in qualifying before making a run to the semifinals of match play at the MHSAA finals. Purvis suffered a 413-373 loss in her semifinal match.
