Police seeking tips after teen shot at party in rural Eaton County

CHESTER TWP. — Police are asking for tips about an incident in which an 18-year-old Charlotte man was shot at a “large party” at a home east of Vermontville.

The incident happened about 3 a.m. July 13 in the 3100 block of West Vermontville Highway, Michigan State Police said in a news release on Tuesday, July 15.

About 70 to 100 people attended a party held on the property, including many uninvited guests under the age of 18, the agency said.

Two people began arguing and ended up on the ground after the dispute turned physical before a suspect who had yet to be identified “walked up, produced a handgun and shot an 18-year-old male from Charlotte that was involved in the fight,” state police said in the release. “The suspect then fled the scene with the other suspect that was involved in the fight.”

The injured man was driven to University of Michigan Health − Sparrow Charlotte, then transported to UM Health − Sparrow Lansing for treatment, officials said. He remained hospitalized in stable condition on Tuesday, July 15, police said. His name was not disclosed.

State police said they have identified “a person of interest” and also were seeking another person involved in the fight. Those two people were believed to have arrived to the party together, they said.
