The University of Michigan’s police department is investigating damage to the greens at UM Golf Course, located across the street from Michigan Stadium.
Officials from UM Golf Course sent out an email to the campus and golf community and its membership Thursday morning, saying an “unexpected issue” has affected the turf on the greens “over the last few days.”
“We have experienced an unforeseen and highly unusual decline in the coloring of our putting surfaces,” UM Golf Course officials wrote in the Thursday email.
“Our grounds team is actively monitoring the situation and developing an action plan for moving forward.”
Course officials added, “We suspect foul play may be involved,” and that an investigation is under way.
When reached for comment by The News, Andrew Romig, general manager of UM Golf Course, declined comment and deferred to the university’s Department of Public Safety. UM police officials didn’t immediately provide comment when reached by The News on Thursday morning.
UM Golf Course is one of the top courses in Washtenaw County, designed in the 1920s by Alister MacKenzie, the architect best known for Augusta National Golf Club. The UM Golf Course opened in 1931.
