PETOSKEY — The Petoskey City Council approved changes to two ordinances during their meeting on Thursday, May 7 regarding firework displays and outdoor lighting.
According to agenda materials, the fireworks discussion began after the city received two applications for displays, including one for a private event in Bay Harbor and another for the July 4 show in Bayfront Park. The ordinance was amended with new language that includes outlining the permitting process for display fireworks.
The amendment was approved in a 3-1 vote, with council member Joseph Nachtrab voting against and council member Lindsey Walker absent.
Changes to the city’s exterior lighting ordinance were first recommended by the Zoning Ordinance Review Committee and the Planning Commission to meet DarkSky standards and provide property owners with updated and usable metrics.
According to agenda materials, the approved amended ordinance will become the first DarkSky-recognized municipal lighting ordinance in the country.
This ordinance was approved unanimously 4-0.
