COLDWATER TWP. MI — A mower driver was injured after being on I-69 in the southbound lane at the Newton Road overpass on hit just before 1 p.m. Thursday, June 4.
Michigan State Police Information Officer Spl/Lt. DuWayne Robinson said a semi truck rear-ended the mower.
Central dispatch confirmed the driver was flown from the scene to a trauma care center.
There were marks on the guardrail where the mower was crushed against it.
The skid marks and tracks showed the semi-driver continued south under the overpass, then went off into the median and across into the northbound lane.
Coils of wire in the semi-trailer spilled into the median.
Wrecker crews with a small Bobcat were brought in to remove the heavy coils of wire.
Michigan State Police closed the interstate from the Fenn Road exit north to the Jonesville Road exit.
Robinson confirmed that the worker was a Branch County Road Commission crew member.
The road commission is under contract with the Michigan Department of Transportation to maintain the I-69 right-of-way.
Several were in use, and signs along the highway warned of the mowing.
As a result, there was heavy traffic throughout Coldwater for the detoured vehicles.
The names of the drivers were not released. The semi driver was not injured, according to MSP.
