Missing Northern Michigan student's body found in Lake Superior

The body of a missing Northern Michigan University student was found Friday, submerged in the waters of Lake Superior, about two months after he went missing.

Marquette police said the body of 21-year-old Trenton Massey, who was last seen Feb. 22, was located around 3:30 p.m. Friday, in the waters of the Lower Harbor, on Lake Superior in Marquette in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

The discovery was made by volunteers from Hybrid Robotics, a Traverse City-based company that makes underwater remotely operated vehicles, police said. Divers from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office then recovered Massey’s body.

Massey had last been seen around 3:30 a.m. Feb. 22 in the area of East Baraga Avenue and South Lakeshore Boulevard, near the Lower Harbor Park in Marquette.

Police previously said he appeared to be disoriented and was having trouble walking when he went missing. He was seen on camera traveling east on a bike path at the 7th Street Bridge. Authorities believe he was trying to walk to his home on McMillan Street.

The search for the construction management student involved hundreds of volunteers, as well as more than a dozen law enforcement agencies, police said.

The effort was complicated by ice up to 28 inches thick along the Marquette shoreline at the time.

Authorities have not said how Massey may have ended up in the water. Police said an autopsy is underway.
