Michigan under winter storm warnings, weather advisories. Here's where

Michigan residents can expect snow and cold Wednesday morning, Jan. 21, with accumulating snow across lower Michigan, wind gusts causing whiteouts and dangerous cold air lingering statewide.

“Light to moderate snow will continue today (Jan. 21) for most areas,” the Gaylord National Weather Service said on X on Jan. 21. “A few spots in NW lower will see a couple rounds of heavier snow, one this morning and another this evening. Winds will strengthen later this evening into tonight, with gusts up to 20 to 30 mph.”

All of the Lower Peninsula, from about Saginaw Bay to the south is under a winter storm warning or winter weather advisory. In the U.P., the advisory extends from Wisconsin east to Marquette and Escanaba.

Here are the warnings, watches and advisories in place for Jan. 21 in Michigan including the Great Lakes:

Is Michigan under a winter weather advisory?

Southwest, central and southeast Michigan, and the Keweenaw Peninsula in the Upper Peninsula all are under a winter weather advisory Wednesday morning, Jan. 21. The NWS expects 3-6 inches of snow and 25 mph winds.

Officials recommend driving with caution as roads will be slippery and visibility may be limited due to blowing snow.

Is there a winter storm warning in Michigan?

Yes. Ottawa, Muskegon and Oceana counties in southwest Michigan are under a winter storm warning Wednesday morning, Jan. 21, because of the likelihood of more than 6 inches of new snow.

Have warnings been issued for the Great Lakes?

Yes. Officials issued a heavy freezing spray warning for lakes Michigan and Superior because of rapidly accumulating ice on vessels and other structures that could cause damage.

In addition, a gale warning is in place for the southern half of Lake Michigan until Thursday, Jan. 22, because of waves up to 12 feet and 40 mph wind gusts.

Is there an extreme cold warning in Michigan?

An extreme cold watch has been issued for Baraga, Dickinson, Iron, Marquette, Menominee, Gogebic, Keweenaw, northern Houghton, Ontonagon and Houghton counties in the western U.P. because of potential wind chills as low as 40 below zero.

The watch is scheduled to last from Thursday evening, Jan. 22, through Saturday afternoon, Jan. 24, according to the NWS.
