Gasoline prices in Michigan soared 85 cents in a week, making the average price for regular unleaded gas $4.87, AAA-The Auto Group announced Monday.
The price is a dollar more than a month ago and $1.65 higher compared to the same time in 2025, officials said.
GasBuddy reported the national price Monday at $4.42, a 38-cent jump since last week.
Motorists in Michigan are paying an average of $73 for a full 15-gallon tank, AAA reported.
What’s behind the trend
The Energy Information Administration reported domestic gasoline supply fell from 228.4 million barrels to 222.3 million. Gasoline production dipped last week, averaging 9.8 million barrels per day. EIA reports crude oil inventories decreased by 6.2 million barrels from the previous week.
“Gasoline prices rose in every state over the last week, with some of the most significant and fastest increases concentrated in the Great Lakes, where states like Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois saw sharp spikes, while Wisconsin experienced more modest gains,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
“At the same time, diesel prices surged to new records in parts of the region, with some areas touching the $6-per-gallon mark. While refinery outages were a key driver behind those outsized increases, early signs of improvement could help ease some of the most extreme price pressures in the Great Lakes in the days ahead.
“Beyond the region, markets are also digesting a wave of new developments— including OPEC+ raising production for June and President Trump outlining a plan to free stranded ships— which could help restore some supply. However, with so many moving pieces, the outlook remains highly fluid, and while some localized relief may emerge, broader price volatility is likely to persist in the near term.”
GasBuddy says Detroit’s pump price is $4.82, according to its survey of 1,734 stations in the city. That is 98 cents higher than a month ago and $1.68 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.
The gas company reports the national average price of diesel at $5.62, a 21-cent increase compared to a week ago.
Where are the highest, lowest prices?
According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Detroit and the state was priced at $3.99 Sunday while the most expensive in the city was $6.09. The highest price in the state was $6.13.
Metro Detroit’s current average is $4.83 per gallon, AAA says. That is 76 cents more than last week and $1.66 cents above the same time a year ago.
As of Monday morning, GasBuddy reports prices under $4 at Ammex Duty Free on Fort Street in Detroit, at $3.59; and $3.99 at Sheetz, 2103 W. Michigan Avenue in Ypsilanti, Summit Gasoline in Sault Ste Marie as well as a Marathon station on Galbraith Line Road in Yale.
The most expensive gas price averages are in Benton Harbor ($4.94), Ann Arbor ($4.92) and Grand Rapids ($4.91).
The least expensive prices are in Marquette ($4.65), Flint ($4.82) and Metro Detroit ($4.83).
“Michigan drivers are feeling the squeeze as gas prices spike 85 cents in one week,” said Adrienne Woodland, AAA’s spokesperson, in the release. “Until oil prices ease and gasoline stocks rebuild, drivers may continue to feel pressure from higher prices at the pump.”
