Hours before President Donald Trump’s looming deadline to make a deal with Iran, about 50 protesters gathered in front of the McNamara Federal Building in downtown Detroit to oppose war and the U.S. bombing of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The protest came after Trump said Tuesday “a whole civilization will die tonight” if a deal is not made ahead of the 8 p.m. deadline to agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has since said he extended the deadline and that the United States will delay hitting Iran with a barrage of strikes for two weeks, USA TODAY reported.
Protest organizer Russ Bellant, 77, of Detroit, said groups, including Moratorium Now, Macomb Defenders Rising, Democratic Socialists of America and more got together to oppose the “war crimes,” “constitutional violations,” and Trump’s threat to Iranian civilization.
“This is not acceptable,” Bellant said. “We’re going to take whatever actions we can to stop it and prevent it from reoccurring. … I just try to remind everyone that bombs don’t put bullets in people. They shred bodies apart. This is horrific and when you’re saying your just going to bomb to hell, which he literally said, there is nothing like this in our lifetime.”
U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Shri Thanedar denounced Trump’s Truth Social posts and called for his removal from office.
Before the U.S. began striking Iran on Feb. 28, thousands of Iranians were killed during protests of the nation’s repressive government, USA TODAY reported. Iran Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in one of the attacks during the “Epic Fury” operation.
Since then, human rights activists in Iran estimate more than 3,636 people in Iran have died, of which 1,211 are military fatalities and 1701 are civilians. Another 714 are unclassified between civilian and military personnel. Lebanon’s public health authorities said 1,461 people have been killed by Israeli strikes as of April 5, Reuters reported April 5.
Hanadi Fahs, of Dearborn Heights, said she brought her family to the protest to stand against oppression. She said she hopes more people seek out news sources from all over the world, such as The Muslim Journalists network, and that people who see the protest take the time to educate themselves about the war and how it is impacting people in the Middle East.
“We’re standing against an illegal war and the war crimes of our president,” she said. “And we do not want to be fighting a war for Israel. The president does not have the best interests of our American people in mind. … I want people to wake up. I want people to know that their voice matters. I want people to know that their role matters. And I want people to seek the truth.”
Moratorium NOW Coalition organizer Abayomi Azikiwe said health care and social services are being cut in the United States as the country spends billions of dollars to be at war with Iran.
“People need to stand up to this war. It’s not gonna benefit the majority of people in this country,” Azikiwe said. “We have to speak out against that. We oppose genocide.”
