Austin Stoll, a physical education teacher at Colon Elementary School, has been selected as the Sturgis Journal Amazing Teacher for the month, presented by John B. Simpson Co. and LL Electric.
Rebecca Stoll nominated him, crediting him with connecting deeply with students while going far beyond his primary role to strengthen school culture and expand opportunities for learning.
“Austin is a first year teacher that has connected with so many students. He has started a new weekly STEM class for all students and has engaged other school personnel with physical education through students vs. staff volleyball and basketball games,” she said. “He also introduced a Jump Rope for Heart program to raise funds for the school and to show kids how important it is to give back to the community.”
In addition to teaching physical education, Stoll serves as recess supervisor, helps manage student pickup and drop‑off, works daily with a small group of students on math skills and coaches both basketball and baseball. He is also one of the teachers helping lead Colon Elementary’s growing STEM program.
From the teacher
Stoll said being nominated as an Amazing Teacher in just his second year of teaching is both humbling and encouraging.
“I’m honestly overwhelmed and so grateful to be nominated as an Amazing Teacher — especially in just my second year of teaching P.E. in our small school community,” he said. “When I started here, I just wanted to make a difference — to help students build confidence, learn teamwork and discover that being active can be fun and empowering.”
He added that physical education is about much more than sports.
“Teaching P.E. isn’t just about fitness. It’s about helping students step outside their comfort zones, supporting each other, learning resilience and celebrating progress — no matter how big or small,” Stoll said. “Seeing their growth every day is the real reward.”
What inspires him
Working in a small school has shaped how Stoll approaches his role and relationships with students and colleagues.
“In a small school, we’re more than colleagues and students — we’re a family,” he said. “The support from fellow staff, administration and our amazing students is what makes this possible. This nomination belongs to all of us.”
Advice for future teachers
Stoll encourages new educators to embrace growth and stay committed to making a difference.
“I’m still learning, still growing and still finding new ways to inspire my students,” he said. “This recognition truly encourages me to keep pushing forward and giving my best every single day.”
